The Kedron Singers are very pleased to be part of the programme at the Lunchtime Concert on Saturday 7th November 2009 in Greenbank Parish Church.
The concert is a celebration of the music of John Weeks, a member of the Kedron, and will “showcase” a new work based on the 23rd Psalm, written in memory of our dear friend Tom McCulla, who sadly passed away earlier this year.
The concert will also feature other musicians – such as Professor George McPhee of Paisley Abbey, Alasdair Savage (Violin), Michelle McCabe (Flute), Moria Porteous (Soprano) and friends of John who will join with the Kedron in singing our two items.

This is a clip from 2007, when Tom came across this ancient Church and found it had an organ. Enjoy this clip of Tom’s joyful music.

That cheeky chappy Tom McCulla
It is with a very deep sadness that we pay tribute to and mourn the loss of Tom McCulla, the Kedron Singers’ gifted and talented accompanist. Tom who was 52 years old (you can’t believe that can you!?) had fought bravely against a brain tumor which robbed him, through the loss of good sight, of his ability to be at home with his music. He passed away peacefully on Friday 5th June at St Andrew’s Hospice Airdrie.
Tom was undoubtedly one of a kind., and there was none other than the Tom we all knew and loved. He was a truly exceptional person. I especially remember Tom at his best telling stories, interwinned with humorous anecdotes showing off his love of terrible jokes and cringe worthy puns (which I laughed at for hours!), we remember him as highly gifted in his composition skills in both music and deep and meaningful words…… as a wonderfully competent keyboard player as both pianist and organist. Tom was very much a traveller – his passport was in constant use! His holiday snaps, and holiday stories enthralled everyone and encouraged many to travel to distant lands. Above all this exceptional person had a love and faith to which he used his gifts to serve his God many times and which such a desire he touched the lives of many. Everyone who knew Tom was proud to call him a friend.
We were all shocked by the news last year of the seriousness of his illness, but were amazed at his determination – he never gave up nor lost his faith. It is these two things that supported and strengthened him when he was at his weakest, and of course the love and care from family and friends. Throughout his brave battle he always managed to show us his adorable sense of humour.
The picture I have used above was taken whilst at St Aiden’s Church Clarkston in the Autumn of 2008, when he was part of the Angelus Singers. He treasured this picture, of him in his Choir uniform, and it took pride of place in his home, and latterly in his room at St Andrews. He was very fond of telling me that he had actually worn robes to sing and that the Kedron should follow suit!!!!
A Service of Thanksgiving and Rememberance will be held on Thursday 11th June at 11am in St Matthew’s Church of the Nazarene, Gordon Street, Paisley.
Tom will always be remembered by the Kedron Singers, our Friends and members past and present. We will miss his wit and charm, his bubbly personality and musical adventures. On a personal note I simply say in gratitude “thank you for the music”.
on behalf of the Kedron Singers,
Alan Mathew
